Worcester, Mass. – No. 3 seeded Uxbridge used a smothering defense that held sixth-seeded Hopedale to 22 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers as the Spartans advanced to the Small School semifinals with a 38-33 win over the Blue Raiders on Sunday afternoon.
Uxbridge, the defending small school champions, held Hopedale to just two points in the second quarter while improving to 14-6 overall.
Senior captain Corey Gomes led the Spartan attack with 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocks, while junior Mark DeVries added eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Blue Raiders held a 45-37 edge on the glass led by both Jeremy Bacon and Paul Manning who each hauled in a game-high nine.
Evan Lerner paced Hopedale (13-7) with 11 points and six rebounds. Ian Strom chipped in with an excellent all-around effort totaling nine points, six rebounds, four assists, four steals and a pair of blocks.
