Worcester, Mass. - Host Clark University and
Springfield split a New England Men's and Women's Athletic
Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, with the
Cougars getting a walk-off 4-2 win in game one and the Pride
securing a 15-8 win in game two.
Junior Peter Lewis (Gardiner, Maine) capped a wild Clark comeback in the bottom of the seventh when he crushed a two-run homer to lift the Cougars to the game one victory. Down 2-1 entering the frame, pinch hitter Andrew Agostini (Williamstown, Mass.) smacked a double to right field. Leadoff hitter Steve DeMartino (East Haven, Conn.) then sent a double down the left field line, scoring pinch runner Matthew Bohl (Amherst, Mass.) with the game-tying run.
Lewis, who was 2-for-4 in the game, then launched his third round tripper of the season to season the win for Clark.
Things were looking bleak for the Cougars heading into the seventh as the Springfield pitching combination of Jon Wurster and Chris Collard had for the much part, silenced the Clark bats with the exception of freshman Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.), who hit his first career homerun in the fifth.
Dubois' homer cut a Pride lead, built on the back of solo shots from Joe Kropa in the fourth and Michael Micik in the fifth, in half setting the stage for Lewis' heroics.
Senior hurler Jonathan Merritt (Milton, Mass.) tossed his first complete game of the season for the Cougars to improve to 5-1.
Collard, who pitched the final 1.1 for the Pride took the loss after giving up three hits and three runs.
Game two, saw Springfield jump out to an 8-0 lead, as they put crooked numbers up in each of the first four innings, highlighted by a four-run fourth inning that chased Clark starter Brendan Solecki (Portsmouth, R.I.).
The Cougars closed the gap in half, scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth with a Mitch DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) homer and a DeMartino two-run single doing most of the damage.
Things got more interesting in the fifth when the Cougars plated three more runs coming on RBI from Phillip DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.) and Kevin Kopec (Katonah, N.Y.).
The Pride got a little breathing room in the sixth when Kropa drove in two runs in the sixth with a single up the middle off of Cougar reliever Michael Lamothe (Bellingham, Mass.), making the score 10-7.
Clark made another push in the eighth when Dubois led off the inning with a triple to centerfield and scored on a Jeremy Gerber (Amherst, Mass.) groundout.
Springfield salted away the win with a five-run top of the ninth highlighted by a two-run double by Mike Corletta, an RBI double by John Schmaltz and Miciks second home run of the day.
Clark returns to the diamond on Tuesday with a road trip to Babson, while the Pride visit Fitchburg State on Monday.
