Cougars Rebound With Saturday Sweep

Springfield, Mass. – Clark University rebounded from Friday's shutout loss by taking both ends of a doubleheader with Springfield College on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars won the opener 6-3 before rolling in the nightcap, 13-7, to win the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) West Division series between the two teams.

How It Happened In Game 1:
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) led off the frame with a triple and then came home on a Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) groundout.

Things were tied up in the bottom of the sixth when Brandon Drabinski drove in a run with a single to center.

Lefebvre put the Cougars back in front with a run scoring single in the seventh and then Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) blasted a three-run homerun in the eighth to move the Cougars ahead, 5-1.

Springfield did tack on two runs in the eighth when Mark Joao smacked an RBI double and then Drabinski singled in another run.

Clark did add an unearned run in the ninth and then Downing came in to finish the game, collecting his league-leading sixth save.

Inside The Boxscore:
Hutchinson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) went 2-for-3 and Lefebvre drove in two runs.

Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) improved to 5-0 overall with his eight innings of work, scattering eight hits and three earned runs.

How It Happened In Game 2:
The Cougars banged out 16 hits to complete the twinbill sweep on their way to a 13-7 win.

Clark pushed two runs across in the top of the first as Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) drove home Bonicki who doubled and he then came home on a Hutchinson single.

Chochrek was in the middle of it again when the Cougars added a run in the third when he doubled to open the inning and then he scored on a Hutchinson single.

After Springfield scored two runs in the third, Clark put four runs on the board in the top of the fourth highlighted by a Chochrek three-run double down the left field line.

The Cougars had another four-run inning in the sixth which included a two-run single by Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.).

Clark got two more runs in the ninth when Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) walked and then scored on a Bonicki triple and a Chochrek single.

Inside The Boxscore:
Chochrek had a career afternoon, going 5-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBI, while Bonicki went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple.

Meanwhile, both Hutchinson and Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine) had two hits each.

Clark will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Massachusetts Maritime at 3:30 p.m.
