Melkonian Named NEWMAC Co-Player of the Week
Worcester, Mass. - Clark freshman Mel
Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) has been named the New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) co-player of
the week it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
She shares the award with Mount Holyoke senior Tricia Chase.
Melkonian has ignited the Clark offense as of late, scoring 15
points in two games last week and has scored a team-leading 27
points this season.
In the Columbus Day win over Smith, she scored a career-high four
goals and added an assists as the Cougars knocked off the host
Pioneers, 7-1.
Then in a thrilling, come-from-behind 4-3 overtime win against
Wheaton, she scored three goals including the game-tying and the
game-winning goals, lifting Clark into a first-place tie in the
league standing with Wellesley at 4-1.
Through 11 games this season, she leads Clark in goals (12), points
(27), shots (50) and is tied for the team lead in game-winning
goals.
With the high scoring tandem of Melkonian and Lauren
Blake (Oakland, Maine) leading the way, the Cougars
have won five of their last six matches and have surpassed their
win total from a season ago.
Melkonian will take her offensive exploits back to the field on
Tuesday when Clark travels to Mount Holyoke for a 7 p.m. meeting
with the Lyons.
