The Lead: Neighboring New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe, WPI downed the Cougars of Clark University 6-0 on Tuesday evening. Rookie midfielder, Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, Mass.) lifted the Engineers to victory with three goals on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Four first half goals gave WPI a commanding and comfortable lead early in the contest.
-Eight minutes and 11 minutes into play, O'sullivan tallied back to back goals off of assists from senior Amanda Richards (Wilmington, Mass.). Both goals were scored off of penalty corner opportunities for the Engineers (2-0).
-Freshman Engineer, Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, N.H.) fought her way through a sea of Clark defenders to extend the visitor's lead to 3-0 with 15 minutes to play in the first half.
-O'Sullivan tallied her third and final goal of the night before the halftime break as Suzy Opalka (Harvard, Mass.) found her inside the 16-yard circle and she lifted the ball behind Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I) for the 4-0 lead. The Cougars were able to hold off WPI for the remaining ten minutes of the first half.
-Michaud made seven saves in net in the first half before freshman goalkeeper Katie Crowley (Bolton, Mass.) hopped in goal for the Cougars at the start of the second half.
-The Cougars and Engineers battled it out on both ends of the field for the first 13 minutes of the second half. Despite multiple close scoring opportunities for the Cougars, WPI was able to capitalize on a shot from Clark freshman Chase Collier (Lisbon, Maine) that they rebounded and carried down to the opposite end of the field. Sophomore Carly Cidado (Easton, Mass.) escaped from the Cougar defense and found the back of the net to extend WPI's lead to 5-0.
-With less than a minute of play on the clock both teams did not let up. Clark's Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md) got the home team's final shot of the night off but was just wide of the net. It was the Engineers that capitalized on the final scoring opportunity with a goal from Richards in the 69th minute of play for the final 6-0 victory.
