Cougars Scoot Past Golden Bears, 2-1.

THE BASICS:

The Lead: The Cougars of Clark University and the Golden Bears of Western New England University battled for 90 minutes on Wednesday night in Worcester, Mass. In a hotly contested non-league matchup, which saw each team light the lamp in the first half, the Cougars were able to score the 2-1 victory on a 2nd half tally from sophomore, Trevor Sheridan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). Scoring first in the 29th minute for the Cougars was sophomore, Sean Munroe (Silver Spring, MD).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Cougars struck first, in the 29th minute on an unassisted goal from Munroe. Munroe found his way in behind the Golden Bear defense and popped a shot up and over the head of a the Western New England University goalkeeper, Sam Brewer (Westford, Mass.), who came charging out of the net on Munroe's fast break.

-Just four minutes later, in the 33rd minute, the Golden Bears were able to tie the game on a goal by sophomore Corey Brown (Somers, Conn), assisted by senior, Logan Pingree (Middletown, Conn)

-The game winner for Clark was scored in the 63rd minute by Sheridan. Assisting on the game deciding tally was freshman, Sam Hartley (Sherborn, Mass.). Hartly and Sheridan exchanged give-and-go passes after the 50 yard line to ultimately set up Sheridan for the game winner on the right goal post.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-The Cougars and Golden Bears each tallied 18 total shots and 5 corner kicks.

-Senior Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) made eight monster saves in net for the Cougars to earn the victory and improve to 3-3 this season.

-Brewer started and played 29 minutes in goal for the Golden Bears. He made three saves and allowed Clark's first goal. Due to injury, Tyler Lavigne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had to step in to finish out the remaining 61 minutes of play. He made two saves and takes the loss as he falls to 2-2 on the season.

UP NEXT: 

-Clark will take the field again this Saturday, October 7th in a NEWMAC battle against the Coast Guard Academy. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

-Western New England hosts Nichols College on the same day in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at 12 p.m.
