Cougars Get Season-Opening Split

Fort Myers, Fla. – Clark University opened up its 2012 season with a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex. The Cougars dropped game one to RIT, 4-2 but picked up a victory in the nightcap, defeating Dominican (Ill.) University, 5-3.

Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) was cruising along in the circle for the Cougars, until the Engineers pushed across the game's first run on an RBI groundout.

Clark answered back in the top of the sixth when Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) led off with a single and Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) followed with a bunt single. A bad throw allowed Allen to come around and even the game and then Melkonian scored the go-ahead run on sacrifice fly by Erin Murphy (Boxboro, Mass.).

After a Meuse recorded the first out of the bottom of the seventh, back-to-back singles put runners on first and second. Sarah Wolcott then blasted a walk-off game-winning three-run homer to send RIT home with the victory.

Meuse was dazzling despite the loss, striking out ten without yielding a walk. Allen and Melkonian combined for all five of Clark's hits, with Allen going a perfect 3-for-3.

In game two, Meghan Lennon (Charlton, Mass.) tossed five innings, allowing just two hits and hit the second homerun of her career, lifting the Cougars to the 5-2 win.

Clark scored the game's first run on a wild pitch in the first, and then moved to a 2-0 edge on Lennon's roundtripper.

The Cougars put two runs on the board in the third when Murphy's double plated Melkonian, who had reached on an error. Murphy then came around to score on a Stefanie Kettenacker (Hastings-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.) single to right.

Clark's last run came was an unearned marker in the fifth after singles by Maureen Coakley (Worcester, Mass.) and Allen.

Allen had three more hits in game two, while Melkonian recorded two more of her own.

The Cougars will return to the diamond on Monday with games against Wilmington (Ohio) and Wittenberg (Ohio) beginning at 9:00 a.m.
