Cougars Drop Two To Rival Bears

New London, Conn. – Coast Guard hurler Julia Ferris threw a pair of complete game victories for the first time in her career and the host Bears swept a New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader from Clark University on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1: Coast Guard 4, Clark University 2

Kayla Sowers was 3 for 4 while classmate Claire Hurley added a pair of hits and Ferris (7-10) scattered five hits, allowed a pair of earned runs, walked one and struck out three to pick up the complete game victory.

Clark took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) and that lead quickly doubled when Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) blasted a solo homer to left in the third.

Coast Guard got on the board in the third as Sowers, Hurley and Courtney McKenna all singled before freshman Audrey Bartz drew a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Bears pulled even in the fifth thanks to a pair of errors tying the game 2-2.

The hosts would also take the lead on an error in the sixth as Casey Cruzpino led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt by Malia Hindle and came around on a throwing error. The Bears would add an insurance run later in the inning on an RBI single by Hurley.

Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) went the distance for Clark and took the loss allowing nine hits, four runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out four.

The nightcap proved to be a power display the two teams combined to blast four homeruns, including the second of the day by Mackey.

Coast Guard struck first as Sowers stole home in the first for a 1-0 lead but a Michelle Robidas (Westford, Mass.) brought home Mackey, who led off the inning with a single.

The two teams traded runs – first the Bears on an RBI single by Audrey Bartz and then Clark on a Mackey blast – that left to the score 2-2 after four.

Coast Guard then broke the game open with three in the fifth and three in the sixth on homeruns from Kelly Franza and Emma Hvozdovich.

Ferris (8-10) fanned a career-high eight while scattering seven hits, allowing a pair of earned runs and walking three for the win.

Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mass.) took the loss for Clark as she pitched 5.1 innings allowing nine hits, seven runs (six earned) with one walk and three strikeouts..

Mackey and Taylor Erickson (Natick, Mass.) had two hits each for Clark in the nightcap.
