Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University used a balanced offensive attack and posted its first win of the 2011 season with a 3-0 victory over Worcester-area rival Becker (0-3) in non-league women's volleyball action on Thursday evening.
The Cougars (1-2) got a match-high nine kills from freshman Mel Conde (Union City, Calif.), eight more from junior ToniMarie Illuzzi (Manorville, N.Y.) and seven from senior Amira Tranchell (Falmouth, Mass.) in defeating the Hawks for the second straight season.
Clark won the first game 25-14, but found itself in a back and forth affair in the second. Neither team led by more than two points until the Cougars took a 23-20 lead en route to the 25-20 victory.
The third match was all Clark as they ran off 13 of 15 points to build a commanding 20-9 edge before settling for the 25-11 decision in the decisive game.
Becker was paced by Nicole Morse (Alton, N.H.), who recorded a team-best six kills and a pair of solo blocks, while Joanna Slomiak (Brockton, Mass.) handed out 14 assists.
Clark was especially effective on the serve registering 16 aces, with four each coming from Nichole Lopez (Alameda, Calif.), Spera and Kelley.
Becker returns to action on Saturday in search of their first victory of the season when they take part in a tri-match involving Massachusetts-Maritime and Regis College.
The Scarlet and White, meanwhile, will be out to defend their 2010 Worcester City Tournament title when they face Worcester State at WPI on Saturday as well.
