Cougars Outlast Pioneers in NEWMAC Battle, 3-0

The Lead: The Cougars of Clark University outlasted the Pioneers of Smith College, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Friday evening. Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) led the Cougars to victory with 16 and 15 kills respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-In the first set of the night the Pioneers jumped out to a 6-3 lead on a kill from Amy Hagen (Owings, Md.), but Clark responded right away with a 7-0 run to go up 10-6. Another 5-0 run midway through the set propelled them to the 25-20 set one victory.

-In the second set of the evening neither team was able to gain a comfortable edge until a 5-0 spurt from the Cougars put them up 10-6. Back-to-back kills from the Pioneers tied the set at 11-11. Clark went up 17-12 but the Pioneers continued to put the pressure on and was able to claw back to make it a two point game at 24-22 before Ramos' kills ended the match (25-22) and the Cougars took a 2-0 lead on the night.

-The final set was tightly contested and featured seven ties before a kill from Clark freshman, Kendra Campbell (Northkingstown, R.I.) jump started a 3-0 run to put the Cougars up 16-13. A six point lead from Clark dwindled down to a 24-21 advantage thanks to strong defense from the Pioneers front line. Ramos closed out the match with one of her game-high 16 kills to give the Cougars the 25-21 victory and the ultimate 3-0 shutout.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Ramos and Mercado led the Cougars with 16 and 15 kills respectively while junior Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) checked in with a game high 42 assists. Ramos also posted a game high 16 digs.

-Clark posted a .206 attacking percentange while the Pioneers checked in with a .140 attacking percentage.

-Hagen led Smith's offense with 11 kills and 12 digs.

-Clark hosts MIT in NEWMAC action on Tuesday, October 10th at 6:00 p.m. in the Kneller Athletic Center.

-Smith returns to action next Tuesday when the Pioneers host Emerson College in conference play at 7:00 p.m.
