Worcester, Mass.—The Clark University baseball team along with Head Coach Billy Cather are pleased to announce seniors Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) as 2019 team co-captains.
"Our team, staff, and administrators were asked to vote on who they wanted to lead our 2019 program. I was very happy to see all 4 seniors receive numerous votes," said Cather. "With that being said, Zach and Cal are both extremely hard workers on the field and in the classroom and I am proud to have them lead our 2019 team. They both are well respected and set a great example for the rest of the team. The bar will be set high for the program and a lot will be required of them this season".
Slepkow started 10 games for the Cougars last season, pitching a total of 63.1 innings, and finishing with a 6-2 overall record. With his fifth win of the season he broke Clark's career wins record in their 3-2 victory over WPI on April 7th. He went eight innings, struck out six batters and allowed just five hits and two runs scored in the conference matchup. His six wins also ranked him second in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in total wins at the conclusion of the 2018 season.
When asked what it means to be named captain and what he is looking forward to this season here is what Slepkow had to say:
"I am honored to be named a captain for this team. We have enough talent to win a NEWMAC championship this year. We came close last year, now we need to learn from it and be better this year".
Kelley finished the 2018 season batting .343 with 46 hits including 12 doubles, four triples, and three homeruns. He tallied 33 runs and finished with a .560 slugging percentage. He led the Cougars and ranked fifth in the NEWMAC in RBIs with 36.
Kelley is also very confident in the talent the 2019 team has shown in preseason and looks forward to to building on the success from last season.
"I am honored that the coaching staff and my fellow teammates see in me the values needed to be a captain and I am very excited for this upcoming year," said Kelley. "There is a lot of excitement surrounding the program as we are coming off one of the best seasons ever for Clark Baseball…the team is confident that we will be able to compete and ultimately achieve our goal of winning a NEWMAC championship and go on to compete at the regional level," he continued. "My main goal as captain is to keep everyone's eyes on the goal, I know we have the talent to do it, I know we have done the work required to do it, now we just have to go out there and do it," he concluded.
The Cougars are set to kick off the 2019 season at home on Saturday, February 23rd when they will host Elms College at 12:00 p.m.
