Baseball Suffers Setbacks to Saint Joseph's

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team fell in a pair of games to the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Granger Diamond. The two teams battled it out in game one, with the Monks clinching the 5-4 victory before racking up 14 hits in game two en route to a 12-3 final.  

Game #1: Saint Joseph's 5, Clark 4


-The Monks hopped on the board in the first inning one a lead-off homerun from senior Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.). The Cougars responded in the bottom of the inning when junior Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) got things started with a lead-off double to center field, sophomore Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) moved him to third with a single to left field, and senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field that sent Thibault home (1-1).

-Saint Joseph's added another run in the top of the second with an RBI triple to right field from freshman Ronan Chisholm (North Chatham, Mass.) that scored sophomore Luke Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.) for the 2-1 lead. Another run in the top of the third on an RBI single to right field for senior Noah McDaniel (Elliot, Maine) extended the Monk's lead to 3-1.

-Clark rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take over the lead. Sophomore James Huber (Rochester, N.Y.) kicked things off with a single to right field, and junior Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) followed up with a double to left center to move Huber to third. First year Andrea Casabianca (Yonkers, N.Y.) earned an RBI when his single to center field scored Huber, and the Cougars trailed by just one run, 3-2. Jordan came home on a passed ball and Thibault sent Casabianca home with a single to left field to give the Cougars the 4-3 lead heading into the fifth inning.

-Sophomore Hunter Richardson (Noth Monmouth, Maine) led off with a homerun in the top of the fifth to tie the game at five apiece before senior Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) scored the ultimate game winning run as the Monks took game one, 5-4.


-Thibault and Casabianca led the Cougars at the plate as they both finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

-Murphy led the Monks with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate, one RBI, and one run scored.

-First year Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn.) started on the mound for Clark and pitched four innings. He finished with two strikeouts as he falls to 1-1 on the season.

-Freshman Matt Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) earned the win for Saint Joseph's pitching two innings and striking out one batter. Sophomore Jonathan Marchia (Chicopee, Mass.) claimed the save in 1.2 innings pitched and posted three strikeouts.

-Both teams finished with eight hits in 28 at bats.

Game #2: Saint Joseph's 12, Clark 3


-After two scoreless innings the Monks posted two runs in the top of the third with an RBI double from Gagne and an RBI single from McDaniel (2-0).

-The Cougars came alive in the bottom of the inning when junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) and Thibault sent back-to-back homeruns over the left field fence, tying the game up 2-2.

-Murphy doubled to left field to score Matthew Martinello (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Johnson in the top of the fourth to extend the visitor's lead back to two, 4-2. Thibault cranked his second homerun of the day, and fourth of the weekend, in the bottom of the inning to help the Cougars close the gap to one, 4-3.

-The Monks used two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, including a homer from Greg Emanuelson (Hudson, N.H.) to take the final 12-3 victory.


-Thibault finished game two 2-for- with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Cougars. Horn finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.

-Emmanuelson finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Saint Joseph's and Murphy went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

-Senior Dan Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) pitched three innings and struck out three batters as he falls to 0-2 on the season.

-Grayson Jennings (Mililani, Hi.) earned the win for the Monks, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, two runs, and striking out one batter. He improves to 2-0 this season.


-Clark is back at home on Tuesday, March 17th to take on the Raiders of Rivier University at 3:30 p.m.

-St. Joseph's travels to Mass.-Boston on Wednesday, March 20th for a 3:00 p.m. game.
