-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team ran away with a 15-2 final victory over the Raiders of Rivier University in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars finished with 12 total hits including five doubles and one triple to secure the 13-point advantage at home.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Cougars took a 3-0 lead after the first inning and put their first hit of the day up on the scoreboard. Senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) doubled to center field to score junior Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) for the first run of the game. Kelley and junior Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass) also crossed home to give the Cougars a 3-0 advantage heading into the second inning.
-The Raiders got one run back in the top of the third inning on a two-out RBI single up the middle from senior Jorge Martinez (Methuen, Mass.) to score first year Corey Cochran (Salem, N.H.) (3-1).
-Clark extended their lead to 11-1 when they rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the third. After Thibault and Kelley came home for the first two runs of the inning, sophomore Kai Herko (Friday Harbor, Wash.) scored Lefebvre from second with a single up the middle for the 6-1 lead. First year Andrea Casabianca (Yonkers, N.Y.) earned two RBIs on his hit to centerfield (8-1) and junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) doubled to right center to send his classmate Jake Good (North Falmouth, Mass.) home for the 9-1 lead. Thibault and Kelley each earned an RBI in their second at bat of the inning to extend Clark's lead to 11-1 heading into the fourth.
-Herko added two more RBIs in the bottom of the sixth when his single up the middle scored first year Dennis Crowley (Belmont, Mass.) and junior Collin Porter (Brookfield, Conn.) (13-1). Junior Brandon Thibault (Methuen, Mass.) doubled for the Raiders in the top of the seventh to score senior David Pappalard (Methuen, Mass.) for their second and final run of the game (13-2).
-Clark used an RBI triple from Porter an RBI double from Crowley in the bottom of the seventh to take the final 15-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Kelley finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Clark. Herko went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored while Thibault finished with a hit, an RBI, and three runs scored on the day.
-Martinez went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Raiders with one RBI. Brandon Thibault added one RBI and a hit for the visitors.
-First year Jacob Pullen (Sudbury, Mass.) earned the win on the mound for Clark. He pitched six complete innings, allowed just two hits and one run scored (0 earned), and struck out five batters. He improves to 1-0 on the season.
-Freshman Dax Billingsley (Lynn, Mass.) falls to 0-2 for Rivier pitching 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, 10 runs scored (seven earned), and struck out three batters.
-Clark collected 12 hits in their 37 at bats while the Raiders finished with six hits in 33 at bats.
-Clark hosts Keene State College tomorrow, March 20th, at 3:30 p.m. at the Granger Baseball Field.
-Rivier hits the road again on Saturday, March 23rd when they head to Johnson & Wales (RI) for a double headers starting at 12:00 p.m.
