-The Lead: The Owls of Keene State College outlasted the Clark University baseball team in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon. After the visitors pulled ahead by as many as nine runs, the Cougars were able to rally back within three in the bottom of the eighth inning before the Owls held on for the ultimate 9-7 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Owls hopped on the board with an early run in the first inning. After senior Mac Struthers (Strafford, N.H.) got on base on an error by the Cougars, he made his way to third on a single to right center from junior Connor Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.). Senior Connor Longley (Foxboro, Mass.) got Struthers across home with a sacrifice fly to right field (1-0).
-Junior Sam Czel (Newtown, Conn.) homered over the left center field fence for two more runs in the top of the third to extend Keene State's lead to 3-0.
-The Cougars got two back in the bottom of the third when senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) started things off with a single to right field and junior Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) sent a two-run homerun over the left field fence (3-2).
-Senior David Sevigny (Rocky Hill, Conn.) put a double off the left field fence to score senior John Tarascio (Wethersfield, Conn.) and junior Tom Meucci (Newington, Conn.) singled to right center to score Sevigny as the Owls took the 5-2 lead after three and a half innings.
-With two outs on the board Longley homered in the top of the fifth to give the visitors the 6-2 advantage.
-Clark closed the gap to two in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs. Junior Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) and first year Andrea Casabianca (Yonkers, N.Y.) walked before junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) doubled to center field for score them both as the Cougars trailed by just two heading into the top of the seventh (6-4).
-The Owls pulled ahead by five in the top of the seventh when Struthers crossed home and junior Ryan Linehan (Bedford, N.H.) earned two RBIs with a single to centerfield that scored his classmate Tyler Gammie (Newington, Conn.) and Longley (9-4).
-The Cougars put three more across home to come within two of the Owls after eight. Kelley and Lefebvre earned RBIs in the rally while Casabianca, Horn and Thibault scored the three runs of the inning (9-7). Keene State held on defensively in the ninth to capture the 9-7 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Lefebvre finished 2-for-5 with a homerun, three RBIs and one run scored to lead the Cougars. Horn went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored on the day while Kelley finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
-Longley finished 1-for-3 with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Owls. Czel went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.
-Sophomore Sean Savage (Berkeley Heights, N.Y.) pitched five innings for Clark. He allowed seven hits, six runs scored (five earned), and struck out four batters. He falls to 1-1 on the season.
-Sophomore Brian Vieira (Wethersfield, Conn.) earned the victory on the mound for Keene State. He pitched one inning.
-Clark finished with nine hits while the Owls finished with 11.
-Clark opens up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, March 23rd when they host the Beavers of Babson College in a double header 12:00 p.m.
-Keene State travels to UMass-Boston on the same day for a Little East Conference double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
