Baseball Soars to Conference Victory Over MIT, 6-2

-Records: Clark (11-15, NEWMAC 3-7), MIT (13-9-1, NEWMAC 5-3)

-The Lead: In their second meeting of the season, the Clark University baseball team came home with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over the Engineers of MIT on Wednesday afternoon.

-After two scoreless innings, Clark got on the board in the top of the third. Junior Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) got on base by a walk before moving into scoring position when junior Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine) got him there with a sacrifice bunt.­­­ Jordan moved to third on a passed ball and ultimately came home when junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) put the ball in play for the RBI and 1-0 lead.

-The Cougars extended their lead to 4-0 with three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, junior Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) walked and moved into scoring position when his classmate Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) singled to left field. Sophomore Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) was hit by a pitch as the Cougars loaded the bases and first year Andrea Casabianca (Yonkers, N.Y.) came up with a two-run single through the left side for the 3-0 lead. Horn earned another RBI when his single to the pitcher scored Radovic to give the Cougar's the 4-0 advantage.

-MIT cut Clark's lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore Ethan Rolland (Burke, Va.) led off with a double to left field and moved into scoring position when first year Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) was hit by a pitch. A single to right field from junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) loaded the bases before sophomore Andrew Krause (St. Louis, Mo.) came up with an RBI single to second base to put the Engineer's first run on the board. Senior Alec Kushner (Cooper City, Fla.) earned an RBI when he sent a sacrifice fly ball to center field to score his classmate Jared Schwait (Boca Raton, Fla.) as MIT trailed by two after six, 4-2.

-The Cougars extended their lead back to four with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Horn was the first runner on base when he was hit by a pitch and sophomore James Huber (Rochester, N.Y.) walked when came in to pinch hit. Senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) moved Horn and, pinch runner, Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) to second and third when he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Lefebvre was intentionally walked to load the bases before Thibault earned an RBI when he was hit by a pitch to send the fifth run across home, 5-2. Radovic sent the final run home when he reached on a fielder's choice and Shaw made it home for the 6-2 final victory.


-Senior Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) earned the victory on the mound for Clark and improves to 5-2 on the season. Slepkow struck out seven batters over six innings pitched.

-Senior Nick Charchut (Santa Monica, Calif.) falls to 0-2 on the season as he pitched six innings for MIT, struck out eight batters, allowed four hits and four runs scored (three earned).

-Casabianca finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Clark while Horn had a 1-for-4 days with two RBIs and one run scored, and Thibault went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. The Cougars finished with four hits in the victory.

-Krause led MIT at the plate going 1-for- 4 with one RBI in the setback. The Engineers finished with six hits on the day.


-Clark hosts Springfield College on Friday, April 12th in a NEWMAC contest at 3:30 p.m. The Cougars will be playing for the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer Program.

-MIT travels to Babson on Friday for a conference game with the Beavers at 3:30 p.m.
