WORCESTER, Mass. -- Clark University first-year Kerry Lefebvre (Freeport, ME.) was tabbed the Division III National Field Hockey Rookie of the Week for October 1 by Synapse Sports.
Lefebvre, an economics major, helped boost the Cougars to a 1-1 week which saw the program move to 2-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play for the first time since the 2009 season.
Clark University began the week with a 3-1 loss to UMass Dartmouth in which Lefebvre was held scoreless during a complete-game effort. But the collegiate newcomer bounced back remarkably on Saturday to close out the week as she propelled the Cougars toward a 5-2 victory against NEWMAC foe Wheaton College as the rookie tallied four goals on just five shots and added an assist.
Lefebvre's play was the key to the victory, ultimately keeping Clark undefeated in the early-conference slate, as the freshman registered the game-tying goal in the 17th minute and then again in the 29th minute of play. With the score deadlocked at two apiece, the freshman showed off her passing ability as well, setting up the eventual game-winning marker from teammate Chase Collier (Lisbon, ME.).
Lefebvre has done plenty early in her career to make an impression as the first-year currently sits tied for third amongst all NEWMAC goal scorers with eight tallies on the 2019 season while also finding a spot at third in the conference for points with 19. In both of those categories, Lefebvre is also currently second amongst all freshmen in the NEWMAC, trailing only Paige Forester of MIT for the lead in goals (13) and points (27).
The honor marks the second recognition of the season from Synapse as Collier was named to the Div. III honorable mention the previous week.
The Cougars, winners of four games in their last five contests, will look to continue their momentum Saturday, October 10 in a NEWMAC bout against Wellesley at Granger Field at 11:00 am.
