Men's Basketball Runs to Thrilling Overtime Victory Over Regis, 88-81

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team battled to a thrilling overtime victory over the Pride of Regis College in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon. First year Joel Arteaga (Wyncote, Penn.) posted his second double-double of the season with 20 points, including six in the overtime period, and 10 rebounds.


-The Cougars led by as many as 15 points in the first half before Regis was able to tie the game with just four seconds on the clock. A 5-0 run was sparked when Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) laid one in under the basket at the 15:44 mark. The sophomore forward added seven more points in the rally from a three-pointer and two more layups to help the Cougars climb to an early 18-3 lead with 9:39 on the clock.

-Regis was able to tie the game with just four seconds on the clock to have the two teams head to the locker rooms at an even 29-29 score. The Pride ended the first half on a 4-0 run highlighted by three-pointers from sophomore Gibou Njie (Miramar, Fla.) and junior Michael Carucci (Suffield, Conn.).

-The second half was closely contested with the Cougars pulling ahead by nine points at the 9:06 mark and Regis gaining their first lead of the game with just 2:41 to play. Clark responded with seven unanswered points, four from junior Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.) and three from Arteaga on an and-one play, to pull ahead by eight with 1:06 to play (72-66). Regis fought back with seven points in the final minute of play, capped off with a three-pointer from junior Dimitri Rosa (Tiverton, R.I.) with just 14 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime, tied at 73-73.

-The cougars scored eight points in the first four minutes of overtime to pull ahead by nine. Two threes from Arteaga, one from Davern, and a layup from Kittredge gave the hosts the 84-75 advantage with just one minute to play. Again, the Pride fought back with back-to-back three-pointers to tighten Clark's lead back to three with 29 seconds to play. That was as close as Regis would come as Clark went on to take the 88-81 victory.


-Davern led the Cougars with 23 points in the victory to go along with eight rebounds. Kittredge followed that lead with 22 points and nine rebounds and Arteaga posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

-Senior Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) led Regis with 23 points and also grabbed six rebounds. Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) posted a double-double in the setback with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

-Clark shot 47.9% from the field and Regis shot 45.6%.

-The Pride shot 43.8% from beyond the arc while the Cougars shot 32.1%.

-The Pride outrebounded Clark 49-37.

-Clark forced Regis to turn the ball over 15 times and converted those into 11 points.


-Clark is back at home on Thursday, December 6th when they host the Rams of Framingham State University at 7:00 p.m.

-Regis hosts Rhode Island College on Monday, December 3rd at 6:00 p.m.
