WPI Claims NEWMAC Meet with Men's Swimming and Diving

Worcester, Mass.--The Clark University men's swimming and diving team hosted the Engineers of neighboring Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Wednesday evening. The Engineers claimed a 137-80 victory over the Cougars in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

In the second event of the day senior Steven Castiglione (North Haven, Conn.) finished third overall in the men's three meter diving event with a score of 220.45. Later in the evening he claimed second place in the one meter dive with a score of 244.50.

Clark freshman Eric Cobert (Newton, Mass.) earned a season best time of 10:55.79 in the men's 1000 yard freestyle for a fourth place finish in the event. In the 12th event of the evening junior Sebastian Ortega (West Palm Beach. Fla.) finished third in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:13.12. Freshman Nick Sakoff (New York, N.Y.) touched the wall just behind him in 2:14.39.

Ortega and freshman Will Russell (Cumberland, Maine) finished in first and second place respectively in the men's 200 yard backstroke. Ortega finished in 2:18.11 before Russell posted his season best finish, 2:22.23.

Cobert earned a first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 5:19.96. First year Matt Finnegan (Rutland, Mass.) finished in second place in a season best time of 5:34.83.

Cobert, Noah Liscord (Wayne, Maine), Ortega, and Johan Nel (Wayne, Maine) made up the first place 200 yard freestyle relay. The group finished in 1:40.27.

Clark travels to Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, January 27th to take on the Bears in NEWMAC action at 12:00 p.m.
