The Lead: In a match where the winner clinched a spot in the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, the the Clark University men's tennis teamed defeated The Pride of Springfield College on Wednesday afternoon. They now hold the No. 5 seed entering the NEWMAC postseason tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-In doubles play, the top team of Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Morioka, Japan) eased their way to an 8-0 win, only to have the Cougars win the other two matches, including an important 9-8(5) win at the No. 2 spot from Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Jack Han (Bakersfield, Calif.).
-Honda and Romaine continued their impressive play into singles, with Honda cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Romaine earning a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1. However, those would be the only two points that Springfield would muster, as Clark's Siegel earned a victory by a 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 decision at the No. 3 spot in the next closest contest. Zach Keene (Agawam, Mass.) was edged by Han, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4. Jacob Malicky (South Egremont, Mass.) topped Chris Unger (Westfield, Mass.) 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5, and Alex Hattenbach (Wilton, Conn.) defeated The Pride's Freddie Moffa (Granby, Conn.), 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
-Clark will travel to No. 4 Wheaton College on Sunday, April 29th to take on the Lyons in the quarterfinal match starting at noon.
