Pitching Shines Again In Monday Sweep

Naples, Fla. – Clark University got two more stellar pitching performances and the Cougars won their third straight contest, sweeping games from Alverno College and Rockford College on Monday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Game 1 Information
Clark University 6, Alverno College 1
Clark University 3-2; Alverno College 0-2
North Collier Regional Park #5, Naples, Fla.

How It Happened:
Sami West
(Gonic, N.H.) had her second straight dominating start, fanning 15 batters for the second start in a row. She struck out the side in the second, fourth and seventh innings to improve to 2-0 this season with 31 strikeouts and just five walks and six hits allowed in 15 innings in the circle.

As they did in her first start of the season on Saturday, the Cougar offense staked West to an early lead. Christina Kopacz (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) led off the bottom of the first with a double to center and she scored on a Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) single to left.

West then helped her own cause with an RBI single later in the frame and then two more unearned runs came across as the inning wore on, giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead.

Alverno did push a run across on a wild pitch in the third but Clark widened its gap with two more in the fourth.

In addition to her 15 strikeouts, West went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Jocie Orangio (Maynard, Mass.) had two hits and Mackey scored two runs, going 1-for-3.

Game 2 Information
Clark University 4, Rockford College 0
Records: Clark University 4-2; Rockford College 0-4
Location: North Collier Regional Park #5, Naples, Fla.

How It Happened:
As they have all season, Clark got off and running early, scratching across all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first in support of Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.).

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Cougars got an RBI double from Mackey, an unearned run and then two more runs came home on a Kaitlyn DeBlois (Turner, Maine) two-run double.

Rockford had an excellent scoring chance in the second when they loaded the bases with one out, but Foley was able to record back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning unharmed.

After a rocky first inning, Rockford started Brooke Burris found her groove. At one point she retired 13 straight batters until a Mackey single to lead off the sixth broke up the string.

Rockford had another chance to get on the board in the seventh when they once again loaded the bases, this time with two outs. Foley was able to get the final out on a groundball to second, giving the Scarlet and White their second shutout in their first six games.

Numbers And Facts:
Clark has now outscored their last three opponents by a score of 14-2 … Mackey has extended her hitting streak to 17 straight games … Both Foley and West have two starts each. Both have gone the distance in each start … DeBlois has two hits so far this season – a three-run homerun on Saturday and a two-run double in the nightcap.
