Softball Grabs Two Wins over Albion and Drew

GAME ONE: Clark University vs. Albion College

-Score: Clark 10, Albion 2

-Records: Clark (3-2), Albion (2-3)

-Location: Naples, Fla. (North Collier Park)

-The Lead: After trailing 2-1 for five innings, the Clark University softball team used a nine-run sixth inning to take home a 10-2 victory over the Britons of Albion College in their first game of the day on Monday morning.


-Albion put up their first and only two runs of the game in the top of the first inning. With two runners on, sophomore Lauren Beougher (Merrill, Mich.) singled to score junior Skylar Herman (Union City, Mich.) from second for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Estacia Martinez (Rapid River, Mich.) sent a sacrifice fly ball to right field to send her classmate Camille Roloff (Martinsville, Ind.) across home plate to extend their lead to 2-0

-The Britons let the Cougars get one back in the bottom of the first when first year Kaylee Gibson (Northfield, Mass.) singled to center field to score senior Kendra Walker (Cumberland, R.I.) from second (2-1).

-The Brittons didn't allow another run scored until the bottom of the sixth when the Cougars erupted for nine runs for the mercy victory. Sophomore JC Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) started things off with a double to right field and first year Jessica Martin (Winthrop, Mass.) followed up with a single to left field. Gibson walked to load the bases with her classmate Kylie McCabe (Rumson, N.J.) coming up to bat. McCabe walked to tie the game at 2-2 before sophomore Isabella DiOrio (Lincoln, R.I.) sent a single to right center field to score Martin to take the 3-2 lead. After a pitching change for Albion the Cougars went on to score six more runs with RBIs from sophomores Kelsey Joyce (Leominster, Mas.) and Francesca Cocca (Tewksbury, Mass.), junior Christina Kopacz (North Grosvenordale, Conn.), freshmen Francesca Cirone (Franklin Square, N.Y.), Devan Galli (North Adams, Mass.), and two more from Gibson for the final 10-2 victory.


-Gibson led the Cougars at the plate going 2-for-3 from three RBIs in the victory.

-Beougher led Albion offensively with a 2-for-3 three day and one RBI.

-DiOrio improves to 2-1 on the season as she pitched all six innings, allowed just five hits, two runs scored, and struck out two batters.

-Junior Eryn VanderVlucht (Roseville, Mich.) falls to 1-2 this season. She pitched five innings allowing five hits and six earned runs.

GAME TWO: Clark University vs Drew University

-Score: Clark 6, Drew 0

-Records: Clark (4-2), Drew (1-2)

-Location: Naples, Fla. (North Collier Park)

-The Lead: The Clark University softball team earned a 6-0 shutout victory over Drew University in their second game of the day and the second meeting of the two teams in Florida. After falling to the Bears in nine innings yesterday the Cougars rallied for six unanswered runs and held them to just two hits in seven innings.


-Clark started things off with a double to right center field from Kopacz in her first at bat of the game. After finding her way to third on a passed ball Walker singled to right center to send her home for the early 1-0 lead.

-Another double from Kopacz in the bottom of the second, this time to left center, put Cocca on third base with two runners in scoring position. Urella doubled with two outs on the board for two RBIs and the 3-0 lead. Martin added one more run with an RBI single to right field that scored Urella (4-0).

-After a scoreless third inning Clark added one more run in the fourth with an RBI single to right center field from Walker that sent Kopacz across home plate (5-0).

-The Cougars scored their final run in the fifth inning with another RBI single from Walker for the final 6-0 victory.


-Walker led the Cougars going 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Urella went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. McCabe also had a great day at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI. They finished with 11 hits in 25 total at bats.

-Sophomores Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) and Raquel Cabrera (Hawthorne, N.J.) posted Drew's two hits of the game.

-Junior Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mass.) earned the win on the mound for Clark. She pitched all seven innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters.


-Clark is back at North Collier Park tomorrow, Tuesday, March 5th, for two more games with Penn-State Altoona and Albion at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
