-The Lead: The Clark University women's basketball team suffered a setback to the Engineers of MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. MIT senior Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.) tallied her 1,000th career point in the victory as she led the Engineers with 16 points on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Clark took a 5-1 lead to start the game when senior Cori Ouellette (Madison, Conn.) knocked down a three and her classmate Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) followed up with a drive to the basket just three minutes into play. The Engineers were able to edge Clark in scoring 19-14 through the first 10 minutes led by V'Dovec who put up six points.
-A 6-0 rally in the second period lifted MIT to a 32-15 lead with 3:49 on the clock. The visitors were able to outscore Clark 22-10 to take a 41-24 advantage into the halftime break. V'Dovec tallied six more points in the second quarter as she clinched her 1,000th career point before the break. First year Emily Sifferlen (North Andover, Mass.) led the Cougars through the first half with 13 points.
-Clark put up 13 points in the third quarter led by sophomore Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, Mass.) who went 3-for-5 from the floor for six points. Senior Kristen Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) went 2-for-2 from behind the arc as she tallied eight points for MIT in the third. The Engineers put up 22 points to take a 63-37 lead into the final stanza.
-The Cougars won the final quarter, outscoring MIT 22-13. Favaloro and first year Virginia Benbow (Durham, Conn.) combined for 10 points. Benbow put up a three-pointer and a layup while Favaloro made two drives to the basket and added one from the charity stripe. Despite the bid for a comeback, the Engineers were able to secure the final 76-59 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Sifferlen led all scorers with 19 points to go along with three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Favaloro added 12 points and eight rebounds while senior Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.) led Clark under the hoop with nine rebounds.
-V'Dovec and Ngan led MIT with 16 points each. V'Dovec made it a double-double day by adding 10 rebounds. Senior Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) rounded out double-digit scoring with 10 points for the visitors.
-MIT shot 47.4% from the field while Clark shot 30.6%. The Engineers edged Clark in rebounding 43-38.
-Clark forced MIT to turn the ball over 15 times and scored 14 points from those. Clark turned the ball over 17 times while MIT converted them into 16 points of their own.
-Clark hosts Wellesley College in a NEWMAC matchup on Wednesday, January 23rd at 5:00 p.m.
-MIT is on the road again of the same day as they travel to Babson College for a conference contest at 7:00 p.m.
