Women’s Basketball Faces Setback at Wheaton

The Lead: The Clark University Women's basketball team suffered a set back 81-61 against the Lyons of Wheaton College in a NEWMAC conference match up on Saturday afternoon.



-Clark got off to a hot start in the first quarter making seven straight baskets to take a 15-9 with six minutes to play in the quarter. Clark first year Emily Sifferlen (North Andover, Mass.) entered the game and hit a three pointer to extend Clark's lead to eight. The Lyons closed the gap after three three pointers made by sophomore Karli Retzel (Lee, Mass.) and junior Natalie Wind (New Canaan, Conn.) (21-20). 

-Clark started to battle back in the second period with a layup from first year Julia Beebe (Andover, Conn.) (28-32). Wheaton respond with three straight layups from sophomore Mikayla Pucci (Hopkinton,Mass.), junior Sara McLeman (Auburn, N.H.), and Wind to extend their lead to 10 (38-28). Clark once again battled back after a layup from sophomore Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, Mass.) and a layup and a made free throw from senior Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) (37-42).

-The Lyons saw one of their largest leads in the third quarter after a made three pointer from first year Mia Len (Amherst, N.H) put the Lyons up by 20 (61-41). Clark attempted to make another come back with just under five minutes in the quarter after baskets from Sifferlen and O'Gara, and four made free throws from Favaloro and senior Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) (63-51).

-The Cougars were able to get the Lyon's lead down to single digits in the fourth quarter after a made three pointer from senior Maya Kerstetter (Northampton, Mass.) (54-63). The Lyons were able to build their lead back, holding Clark to only 10 points in the fourth quarter as they took the game 81-61.



-Pucci lead all scorers on the day pouring in 29 points and adding 10 rebounds. Sifferlen lead Clark with 23 points on the day. Legare and O'Gara both added 9 in the loss.

-The Lyons shot 43% from the floor and 13-26 from three, while holding Clark to 32% and 5-15 from three.

-Clark forced Wheaton into 19 turnovers and was able to create 18 points off of them. Clark turned the ball over 16 times, which Wheaton converted to 16 points.



-Clark is back on the road next Wednesday, January 30th, for another NEWMAC match up against Mount Holyoke College at 7:00 p.m

-Wheaton is back at home on the same day for a NEWMAC game against the Blue of Wellesley College at 7:00 p.m.
