S&D: Clark Finishes Fifth in Season-Opener

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Clark University swimming teams opened up the 2019-20 campaign on Saturday afternoon with the men capturing second place while the women swam their way to a fifth-place finish at the Roger Williams University Invitational.

The Cougars men's squad finished second out of six teams competing, recording a combined 249.5 points during the meet to trail only host Roger Williams. The women collected 214 points for the day to place them fifth out of nine teams.

The men's squad performed well in the relay portion of the race as they also finished in second place in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Will Russell (Cumberland, R.I.), Konstantin Drallios (Astoria, N.Y.), Dean Whyte (Wrentham, Mass.) and Gor Bagumyan (Barrington, R.I.) clocking in at 1:48.01. The Cougars finished second in the 200-yard freestyle as Drallios, Bagumyan, Nick Sakoff (New York, N.J.) and Chris Whittington (Edison, N.J.) raced to a 1:36.31 time.

The team of Bernave Twyman (Lafayette, Calif.), Phillip Bogaevsky (Acton, Mass.), Daniel Broderick (Toland, Conn.) and Eric Cobert (Newton, Mass.) finished off the strong showing in relays with a fourth-place effort and time of 3:40.19 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Individually for the men, Twyman put forth a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with his time of 23:47 just .01 seconds off of a top-three mark. Bagumyan garnered a fourth-place finish of his own in the 100-yard butterfly with his time of 57.57.

Drallios had a strong season-opener as the junior finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (53.32), sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.06) and seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.75).

On the women's side, the Cougars found success in the relay events, starting the 200-yard medley relay as the team of Charlotte Bedford (Etna, N.H.), Mira Siewert (Worcester, Mass.), Jenny Lee (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Allison Dubick (Cornwall, N.Y.) swam to a second-place time of 1:59.31 to just miss the 1:59.07 mark set by Regis. Later in the 200 free relays, Dubick and Lee were joined by Rachel Helisch (Norwalk, Conn.) and Elizabeth Cownie (Concord, Mass.) for a third-place finish with a time of 1:49.19.

Individually for the women, Bedford put forth the highest-individual placement as the first-year finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.74. Dubick finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 58.66, while Siewert added to the list of strong individual performances with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:04.73.

Junior Alison Falder (New Milford, Conn.) enjoyed a solid individual day as well, finishing eighth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:08.67 and recording a ninth-place time in the 500-yard freestyle at 6:01.66.
