-The Lead: Clark University's women's tennis team battled to a close loss in their home match against Worcester State on Tuesday evening. In a 5-4 defeat, the singles matches were the deciding factor as Clark falls to 2-5 on the season and the Lancers are now back at .500 (6-6).
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first doubles match to finish was the No. 2 duo of Maggie Tarbox (Lebanon, Conn.) and Chloe Dunnell (Montclair, N.J.) falling to their opponents Mullane and Collins, 1-8.
-At No. 3 doubles, Elizabeth Tchantouridze (Northfield, Vt.) and her Junior partner Kathryn Benson (Hudson, Mass.) defeated Costa and Hamparian 8-4.
-Clark's No. 1 doubles won 8-5 to help the Cougars gain the overall lead. Elizabeth Garfield (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Anna Gates (North Scituate, R.I.) defeated Alves and Mularski of Worcester State.
-No. 1 singles went Worcester's way, 1-6, 1-6 with Alves beating Garfield in straight sets.
-Clark's Gates was the victor in her close No. 2 match, 7-6 (3), 6-1 over Mularski.
-Tchantouridze fell 2-6, 2-6 to Worcester's Mullane in their No. 3 singles matchup.
-Collings of Worcester State won 6-0, 6-0 over Clark Senior and No. 4 single, Tarbox.
-Clark got the best of the No. 5 singles match with Benson defeating Costa, 6-3, 6-3.
-To round out the day and edge the Lancers to victory, No. 6 Koniciki won in three sets. Clark's Dunnell lost by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 1-6.
UP NEXT
-Today was the second to last match of the semester. Their last one is an away match tomorrow, October 10th, against UMass-Dartmouth at 3:00 p.m.
-Worcester State has two more matches this season. Their next is a home match on October 11th at 3:30 p.m. with RIC.
