Daniel Herbst returns for his fifth season at the helm of the women's tennis program in 2019-20 after leading the Scarlet and White to a school-record ten wins in his inaugural campaign.

In 2015-16, Herbst guided Clark to a 10-8 overall ledger, collecting two wins in conference action. The Cougars were exceptional on the friendly confines of Corash Tennis Courts, posting an 8-2 mark at home winning, seven straight.

Clark made incredible strides in the spring season, winning all four of their matches by a combined score of 28-8.

Herbst came to Clark after spending six seasons as the boys’ tennis coach at Amherst Regional High in Amherst, Mass.

Herbst has worked in several capacities in the tennis world, notably serving as an instructor at Total Tennis in Saugerties, N.Y. for nearly eight years and as the Tennis Director for Amherst Leisure Services, where he coordinated the youth program.

In addition to those positions, Herbst has worked as a tennis professional at Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Lenox, Mass. And at the Berkshire Tennis Club in Pittsfield, Mass.

For 15 years he worked as a physical education teacher at the Northampton Center for Children and Families, where he taught PE to students aged 8-18 who have emotional difficulties.

The New England Women’s And Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) is league that Herbst is familiar with, having served as an assistant coach at Smith College for the 2010 fall season.

Herbst himself is an accomplished individual player, still participating in United States Tennis Association (USTA) Leagues and in 2013 received a 4.5 rating.

A former student-athlete who played baseball at Brandeis University, Herbst received his bachelor’s degree in American Studies in 1994 and then earned teaching certification in physical education from Springfield College in 2007.
