Cougars Come Up Short In Title Match

Worcester, Mass. - Led by tournament MVP Shay Feeley, WPI captured its eighth Worcester City Volleyball Tournament, and second in three years, with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16) victory over Worcester State in the eye-opener and a 3-1 (9-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22) triumph over Clark in the championship match.

The Cougars defeated Becker 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-17) while Worcester State won the consolation match by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-22) margin.

Feeley was joined on the All-Tournament team by fellow Engineer Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, Mass.), Clark's Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, Calif.) and Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), Worcester State's Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) and Becker's Samantha Caouette (Montague, Mass.).

The day began in WPI's Harrington's Auditorium with the final two matches play in the Sports and Recreation Center due to heat and high humidity.

Clark 3, Becker 0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-17)

The Cougars received eight kills from Hannah Fox (Dracut, Mass.) to go with six each from Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.), Ramos and Mel Conde (Union City, Calif.). Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) handed out 13 assists as Kaitlyn Stuck (Bourne, Mass.) and Ramos collected nine digs apiece. Glass-Smythe also added eight digs for the defending Worcester City Tournament Champions.

Danielle Robbie (Bellingham, Mass.) led Becker with five kills while Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) doled out nine assists. Kirsti Hadzewycz (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Chase Peterson (Redding, Conn.) each had nine digs as Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) dug out eight and Landry had seven.

Championship: WPI 3, Clark 1 (9-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22)

Daigle closed out the day with 15 more kills and eight digs while Feely amassed 32 assists and served up four aces. Wallace tacked on eight kills and 10 digs. Kelly Rathje (Scituate, Mass.) pitched in with 17 digs.

Ramos led the Cougars with nine kills and 16 digs. Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) dug out 13 balls and Sanford accumulated 10 of her own. Whitney doled out 20 assists to go with Courtney Pharr's (Seattle, Wash.) 11.

Clark (3-4) entertains Rhode Island College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in their home opener.
