Volleyball Shuts Down Emerson in NEWMAC Victory, 3-1

-The Lead: The Clark University volleyball team battled their way to their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over the Emerson Lions on Tuesday evening, 3-1. With her match high 40 assists, senior Rachel Webb (Celina Texas) now ranks second all-time at Clark.


Set One: Emerson 25, Clark 13

-Clark took an early 4-1 lead with a couple kills from senior Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and an ace from Webb. The Lions responded with a 9-0 run in which senior Kelly Guerra (Randolph, N.J.) tallied two kills and junior Jamie Groel (Chelmsford, Mass.) added an ace to take a 10-4 lead. After a pair of kills from freshman Margarita Perez-Maza (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) brought the Cougars back within four (11-7) the Lions went on another 4-0 run to reclaim an eight point lead (15-7). Mercado and junior Corina Picon (Irvington, N.Y.) were able to add two more kills each for Clark but Emerson came out on top in set one by a 12-point margin, 25-13.

Set Two: Clark 25, Emerson 14

-The second set saw three early ties until the Cougars were able to pull away by three on a kill by Picon (6-3). A couple errors brought the Lions within one, but Clark came back with two more points including another kill from Picon to pull ahead by three, 8-5. Clark took an eight point lead after a pair of kills from Mercado put them ahead, 16-8. Clark took their largest lead of the game to take away a 25-14 victory in set two and even the match a 1-1.

Set Three: Clark 25, Emerson 23

-After being down by three for the first few rallies of the game, Clark started a run of their own that tied the game at 9-9 and forced the Lions to call a timeout. The visitors came out of their timeout and grabbed back-to-back points to come back within one on a kill from Abby Alexander (Orlando, Fla.). The set saw five more ties before Clark pulled away for the 25-23 victory and pulled ahead in the match 2-1.

Set Four: Clark 25, Emerson 19

-After a fourth set that saw four ties, Clark pulled away with a 10-4 run to secure the 24-19 victory and 3-1 match victory. Mercado and freshman Caitlin Leggett (Durham, N.C.) paired up for nine kills (five and four respectively) to lift Clark to the fourth set victory.


-Mercado led all players with 21 kills while Webb added a game high 40 assists and three services aces. Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.) added 22 digs in the victory.

-Grace Tepper (Kensingon, Md.) led the Lions with 20 kills and Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) posted a game high 30 digs. Moaira Brennan dished out 39 assists for the visitors.


-Clark hosts Western New England University on Thursday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m.

-Emerson is back home on the same day when they host Emmanuel College at 7:00 p.m.
