WORCESTER, Ma. – Fresh off a long road trip, the Clark Volleyball team hosted their home opener against the Keene State Owls on Wednesday. Though Clark gave a valiant effort, the Owls defeated the Cougars in straight sets.
-The Owls used a pair of early 3-0 runs to take a commanding lead in the opening set and never look back, eventually winning by a score of 25-14.
-Keene State went up early in the second set due to another 3-0 run, but the Cougars fought back to within two, making the score 9-7. The Owls went on another 4-1 run, grabbing ahold of the lead and shutting out the Cougars the rest of the way for a 25-17 win.
-The third set was the closest one of the match, with the Cougars stalking the lead through most of the set before the Owls went on a 4-0 run to make the score 19-14. With a giant momentum swing, Clark went on a 7-0 run of their own to take the lead away from the Owls, making the score 22-21. The teams traded points to knot the score back up at 24-24, before the Owls ultimately closed out the match 27-25.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Freshman, Claudia Rivera (Guaynabo, PR), led the Cougars with 12 kills on the night.
-Rivera also led the Cougars in points with 13.5, good enough for second among all players.
-Junior, Sophia Torino (Los Angeles, Calif.)had an excellent match on the defensive side, averaging nearly 8 digs per set to finish the match with 23 digs, tied for the highest on the day.
-Clark heads to Hartford, Conn. on Friday to take on Westfield State at the the Trinity College Invitational.
