Worcester, MA - Clark played host to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy tonight in their NEWMAC opener. The Bears came out on top, 3-0 with a well rounded team performancwe. The Cougars battled to keep the match close in the second set, but were overpowered in the first and third sets. For Clark, Marimo Oka (Fukuoka, Japan) led the defensive charge with 19 digs.
In set number one, it was back and forth to start with neither team gaining an edge. After a swing of momentum, Coast Guard controlled the back half of the set to take it 25-12. The second set had some tremendous rallies and scoring oppurtunities were scarce with all of the digs on both sides of the net. After a late push by Clark to try and get the score even, Coast Guard held on for a 25-23 victory. Riding their momentum, Coast Guard claimed a 25-16 third set win to complete the match.
Clark's Claudia Rivera (Guaynabo, PR) was a major player in tonights match with a number of kills, digs, and blocks. Also providing a some valuable playing time for the Cougars were Paige Kacherian (Rowley, Mass) and first year Cameron Gill (Shrewsbury, Mass).
Clark continues their NEWMAC schedule with a match against Babson College. On Saturday the 21st, Babson hosts the Cougars at 11:00AM. That game will be live streamed online.
