VB: Cougars Coast to Straight-Set Victory Against Bridgewater State

WORCESTER, Mass. – Claudia Rivera (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Cameron Gill (Shrewsbury, Mass.) combined for 19 kills as Clark University volleyball coasted to a straight-set victory in just over an hour against non-conference opponent Bridgewater State.

The Basics:

Score: Cougars 3, Bears 0 (25-8; 25-14; 25-12)

Records: Clark University (5-13) | Bridgewater State (6-7)

How It Happened:

The Cougars got it going right out of the gates for an early 9-3 lead in the first set as Rivera recorded a kill and two aces to help the team find their groove. Bridgewater State was forced to call a timeout, but it wouldn't slow the Cougars who went on to record three straight points out of the break to extend the advantage to 12-3.

Later in the opening set, Clark went on another lengthy streak, this time with five straight points as Paige Kacherian (Rowley, Mass.) pummeled a kill to highlight the rally. The Cougars would take the opening set by their largest margin of the night, 25-8.

Clark was able to open it up again during the second set as Rivera logged half of her game-high 12 kills in the frame while Gill contributed three of her own. And just like the opening set, the Cougars were able to establish a comfortable lead early on to pave the way, winning 10 of the first 14 points.

With an 18-12 lead in place later in the second set, the Cougars moved closer to the match victory as five straight points, including two kills from Rivera and an ace by Gill, helped them take a 25-14 set win.

The Cougars continued their momentum into the final set of the night, winning 10 of 11 available points at one point with Marimo Oka (Fukuoka, Japan) delivering three straight aces during that span to provide the host a 15-6 lead.

Clark strung points together in bunches throughout the final stretch of the match, with sophomore Mackenzie Hanna (Lamoine, ME.) sealing the 25-15 set win with her second kill of the night.
