Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Smith College kept host Clark University winless with a hard-fought 6-3 win over the Cougars on Tuesday afternoon in New England Men's And Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action.
The Pioneers improved to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in league play, while Clark slips to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in NEWMAC play.
Things started out well for the Cougars as they won two of the three doubles matches. Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) and Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.) defeated Jaimi Inskeep and Clair Oblamski, 8-4 at No.1.
Julia Bergeron (Lewiston, Maine) and Virginia Cooke (Shelton, Conn.) then knocked off Jordan Dubin and Rachel Canfora, 9-7.
Smith bounced back to take No. 3 doubles behind Eunice Zhao and Bayla Weick, defeating Kristen Cullity (Carver, Mass.) and Maggie Swann (Portland, Maine), 9-8.
Suriano had a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dubin at No. 1, but the Pioneers took the final five singles match in straight sets.
Oblamski took down Sachs, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 and then Weick posted a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Bergeron.
Inskeep had little trouble with Swann at No. 4, collecting a 6-3, 6-2 win, while Canfora was victorious over Cooke at No. 5 (6-2, 6-0).
Zhao then wrapped up the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Cullity at No. 6.
Clark will have one final opportunity to get a win when they host Worcester State on Thursday. Smith will conclude the fall season when they partake in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament from October 14-16.
