Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University rallied from down 2-1 after the doubles matches to record a thrilling 5-4 win over Emerson College in non-league women's tennis action on Wednesday evening at the Corash Tennis Courts.
With the win, Clark improves to 4-3 on the season, while the Lions see their record even up at 1-1.
After Lacey Russell (Roswell, Ga.) and Savannah Mosser (Malibu, Calif.) topped Maggie Swann (Portland, Maine) and Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) 8-2 at No. 1 and Jana Winfield (Andover, Mass.) and Alanna Grady (Springfield, Mass.) took down Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and Lauren Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) 8-2 at No. 3, things seemed to be in Emerson's favor. But Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) and Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.) teamed up to defeat Natalie Nicholas (Syosset, N.Y.) and Annie Nielson 8-6 at No. 2 to help out the Clark cause.
Things then shifted in singles action as Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) rallied to win at No. 1 over Russell (3-6, 6-0, 6-2). Then Swann was victorious at No. 4 over Winfield (6-2, 6-3) and Martha Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) collected a win at No. 5 over Grady (6-2, 6-2).
Emerson scored singles wins of their own however, as Mosser and Nicholas won at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively over Sachs and Hughes, but Snyder won in straight sets over Annie Nielson, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 helping the Cougars to the win.
Clark will now visit Babson on Saturday in their NEWMAC opener, while the Lions will host Albertus Magnus on Saturday as well.
