Worcester, Mass. – Visiting MIT remained undefeated with an impressive 9-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Friday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
The Engineers improved to 8-0 overall with the win and at 7-0 in league matches and have secured the top spot in the upcoming conference tournament which begins on Wednesday, October 22 and is hosted by Babson College.
MIT had little trouble in the three doubles flights, winning 24 of 25 points as they raced to a 3-0 lead.
Elysa Kohrs and Dora Tzeng gave up the only point at No. 1 where Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.) fell 8-1.
Other than that, Michelle Dutt and Sonya Das moved past Emma Coppes (Muncy, Pa.) and Erica Issenberg (Shelburne, Vt.) at No. 2 and Rena Liu and Alana Peters (MIT) breezed by Amy Fallon (Derby, England) and Bichtroan Nguyen (Worcester, Mass.) at No. 3 by 8-0 scores.
Singles action went pretty much the same where Tzeng dropped Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) at No. 2, Dutt bested Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) at No. 3 and Liu defeated Sarah Clay (Ossipee, N.H.) at No. 4 all by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Peters then knocked off Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) at No. 5 and Nina Yang posted recorded a win over Fiorella Hernandez (Managua, Nicaragua) at No. 6 by 6-1, 6-1 tallies.
Long and Wendi Kong locked into a battle at No. 1 singles where Kong won the first set, 7-5 but Long responded with a 7-5 win of her own. In the end, Kong took the win with a 10-5 triumph in the third set tiebreaker.
Both squads have little time for turnaround with MIT hosting Smith College and Clark welcoming Wheaton on Saturday.
