Northampton, Mass. – Host Smith won four singles matches and took two of the doubles flights to earn a hard fought 6-3 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon at the Smith Tennis Courts.
The Pioneers (2-5, 2-5 NEWMAC) got on the board when its No. 1 team of senior Jordan Dubin and sophomore Kelli Cheung took an 8-4 decision over first-year Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and sophomore Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.).
Clark tied the score at 1-1 when its No. 2 team of juniors Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) and Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) downed seniors Seema Samawi and Ruth Yi.
Sophomore Margaret Anne Smith and first-year Samantha Peikes gave the Pioneers back the lead with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
Long took care of Dubin in straight sets at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2 while Snyder won a three-set tiebreaker over Yi at No. 3, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.
With the score tied 3-3, Peikes scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles over Sarah Clay (Ossipee, N.H.) to give the Pioneers a lead they never surrendered.
Also picking up straight sets victories for Smith were Cheung at No. 2, Samawi at No. 5 and Margaret Anne Smith at No. 3.
Clark will return to action on Friday when they take on MIT at 5:00 p.m.
