Worcester, Mass. – Wellesley College swept through the doubles matches with relative ease and the visiting Blue rolled to a decisive 8-1 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win Wellesley improves to 4-2 overall and has now posted back-to-back 8-1 wins to start league play 2-0. The Cougars meanwhile, slip to 2-5 and 0-2 in conference matches.
The Blue wasted little time jumping ahead as Sojung Lee (Seoul, Korea) and Carina Chen (Hong Kong) breezed to an 8-0 win over Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.) at No. 1.
That was followed by another 8-0 win, this one courtesy of Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) and Dasha Kostikina (Acton, Mass.) at No. 3 as they dispatched of Fiorella Hernandez (Managua, Nicaragua) and Sarah Clay (Ossipee, N.H.).
They wrapped up doubles action with Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and Caroline Hsu (Boca Raton, Fla.) besting Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) and Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine), 8-1 at No. 2.
Singles play was pretty much more of the same with the exception of No. 1 singles. There, Long rallied after dropping the first set, 1-6, to take the second at 6-2 and the third in an 11-8 tiebreaker.
Stojkovic moved past Snyder, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 but everything else were 6-0, 6-0 results beginning with Hsu knocking off Gallant at No. 3, Stone rolling past Clay at No. 4, Caroline Dickensheets (Alpharetta, Ga.) getting by Mai at No. 5 and finally Wu pushing past Hernandez at No. 6.
Clark will try to return to the win column with a home conference match against Springfield, while Wellesley will take part in the ITA Regionals at Williams College beginning on Thursday.
