Worcester, Mass. – Springfield College swept all three doubles matches and had little trouble getting through singles as the visiting Pride posted an 8-1 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon.
The win for Springfield boosts their record to 3-3 and 2-3 in conference action, while the Cougars dip to 2-6 overall and 0-3 against league foes.
At No. 1 doubles Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.) got locked in to a battle with Rachel London and Stephanie Forest but the Pride duo prevailed in a tiebreaker, 9-8.
Rachel Litchfield and Stephanie Post cruised to an 8-1 win over Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) and Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and No. 2 and then Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) and Sarah Clay (Ossipee, N.H.) went back and forth with Melanie Thulin and Ariana Shemms, but again, the Springfield tandem pulled through, this time taking the match, 8-4.
The Cougars' lone victory on the day came at No. 1 singles where Long breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 win over London.
From there it was all Springfield as Foster posted a 6-1, 6-0 win against Kravetz at No.2, which was followed by a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 3 slot by Thulin over Snyder.
Litchfield and Shemms captured identical 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively, over Clay and Gallant, while Kelsey Whepley came on to drop Mai in straight sets as well at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.
The Cougars will be back in action on Thursday when they play host to Worcester State.
