Cambridge, Mass. – In what could be considered their best performance of the season, Clark University snapped a 12-match New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) losing streak with a decisive 8-1 win over Emerson College in women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in league contests in advance of Tuesday's home match against the league's top team in MIT.
The Scarlet and White got things rolling in doubles action where Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.) got by Jana Winfield and Theresa Nelson, 8-6, at No. 1.
That was followed by the veteran duo of Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) breezing past Marilia Rosario and Sarah Brennan-Athas, 8-2, at No. 2 and newcomers Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) and Fiorella Hernandez (Managua, Nicaragua) posting the same score victory over Nora Gonzalez and Eastin Ashby at No. 3.
Long continued her impressive freshman campaign with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Winfield at No. 1 to improve to 8-2 on the year, while Kravetz got little resistance from Brennan-Athas at No. 2, collecting a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Snyder won in relatively easy fashion at No. 3, dumping Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-2 and Amy Fallon (Derby, England), making her first collegiate appearance, took care of Ashby at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0 and Hernandez outlasted Rosario, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5.
The match of the day was at No. 4 singles where Nelson and Mai locking into a three set tiebreaker. After Mai won the first, 6-1, Nelson rallied to take the second, 6-4 before winning the third, 10-7.
