Springfield, Mass. – In a match that could've gone either way, it was host Springfield College who came out on top, besting Clark University, 6-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Monday on the Appleton Courts.
With the win, Springfield now stands 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference, while the Cougars fall to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.
In the No. 1 doubles slot, sophomore Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and freshman Emily Shuman (Needham, Mass.) were able to defeat Melissa Parrish (Reading, Mass.) and Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.), 8-1, before Springfield was able to battle back and take the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
At No. 2 doubles, Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) defeated Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) and Adrien Horowitz (Arvada, Colo.), 8-5, while Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) and Melanie Thulin (Manchester, Vt.) took down Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and Kera Snyder (South Portland, Maine), 8-6.
Long was able to defeat London in the No. 1 singles slot, and Shuman defeated Foster 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles, but Parrish was able to best Hughes in the No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3 and Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) was able to defeat Snyder, 6-0, 6-0, to give the Pride the advantage.
In the No. 5 singles slot, Litchfield handily defeated Kravetz 6-2, 6-2, while in the No. 6 singles slot, Shemms prevailed over Horowitz, 6-1, 6-1.
Clark will continue its busy week on Thursday when they play host to crosstown rival Worcester State. Match time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
