Worcester, Mass. – Down 2-1 after doubles play, Clark University rallied by winning all six of their singles matches en route to a 7-2 win over Worcester State on Thursday evening in non-league women's tennis action.
With the win the Cougars improve to 4-5 on the season, while the Lancers fall to .500 at 4-4.
Worcester State looked to be in control after a pair of easy victories in doubles action, including an 8-0 win for Alexis Silk and Cassie Goncalves over Amy Fallon and Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) at No. 3.
Things changed drastically in singles action where the Scarlet and White moved past the Lancers. First it was Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) making fast work of Shelby Jankins, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and then Adrien Horowitz (Arvada, Colo.) had a similar fate, dropping Nathalie Khafaga 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.
Emily Shuman (Needham, Mass.) had a pretty easy time at No. 2, where she eased past Megan Shepherd, 6-1, 6-1.
The final three matches went to third sets beginning with Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) dropping the first set to Olivia Budney, 6-0. Mai responded by winning the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2 to give the Cougars the match.
The final two matches were only played to three in the third set tiebreaker and they both went to Clark. First Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) got by Silk, 6-3, 1-6, 3-1 and then Kravetz outlasted Rachel Green, 6-4, 4-6, 3-2.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday with a home match against Emerson. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m.
