Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Simmons College faced little resistance as they breezed past a Clark University team playing their third match in five days with a 9-0 decision on Saturday afternoon at Corash Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Sharks even out their record at 1-1, while the Cougars slip to 1-2 after their difficult opening stretch.
Simmons jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, highlighted by Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) and Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) easing past Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.) and Emma Coppes (Muncy, Pa.) at No. 3.
Singles action saw a tiebreaker go to Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) at No. 1, where she edged out Emily Shuman (Needham, Mass.) 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Another close match went Simmons way at No. 4, as Rachel Downey (Groveland, Mass.) won a three-set super tiebreaker for the Sharks. Downey won the first set, 6-4 over Adrien Horowitz (Arvada, Colo.) but Horowitz rebounded to take the second, 6-1. In the end, Downey held on to take the third and deciding set, 10-6.
Clark is off until next Saturday when they open up New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action with a home contest against Babson, while Simmons gets right back to action when they host Mount Holyoke on Monday.
