Worcester, Mass. – Down 2-1 after the three doubles matches, host Clark University won five of six singles matches to rally past crosstown rival Worcester State, 6-3, in non-league women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
The win for the Cougars is their second this season over the Lancers and sends their overall record to 8-8 with two matches remaining on their 2015 schedule. For Worcester State, meanwhile, they see their record dip to 5-11 overall and have lost five straight.
After only winning at No. 2 doubles behind Emily Shuman (Needham, Mass.) and Adrien Horowitz (Arvada, Colo.) besting Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) 9-0 the Cougars mounted a match-sealing run in singles action where they rolled to victory with ease in several matches.
First, Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) topped Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Conn.) 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and then Shuman raced by Meg Shepard (Middletown, Conn.), 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 to get the Cougars back in front.
Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) made her way past Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) 6-4, 6-3 to keep the momentum going for the Scarlet and White and then Horowitz made quick work of Khafaga at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match.
Clark's other victory came courtesy of Amy Fallon (Derby, England) where she rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over Green at No. 6.
The Cougars are back in action on Monday when they visit Nichols College at 5:00 p.m.
