No. 2 Baseball Eliminated from NEWMAC Tournament With Loss to No. 4 MIT

NORTON, Mass. – The No. 2 Clark University baseball team (18-21) saw their 2023 campaign come to an end on Sunday morning with a 13-2 loss to No. 4 MIT (16-20) from Sidell Stadium on the campus of Wheaton College.

How it Happened

  • Senior Benjamin Spencer took the mound for Clark and tossed a scoreless first and second inning before sophomore Carter Doran singled and stole second, but the Engineers got out of the jam.
  • After allowing a base hit to start the third, Spencer set down MIT in order and in the bottom of the third, Clark took a 1-0 lead as senior Ryan Caulfield singled, stole second, reached third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Tyler Jones.
  • Sullivan reached third in the bottom of the fourth, but the Engineers recorded the final out of the inning to keep it a 1-0 game.
  • MIT plated two runs in the top of the fifth, and in the bottom half, Caulfield and Jones each walked before the Engineers got the next three batters out in order.
  • After a scoreless sixth inning pitched by junior Andres Hulfachor, the Engineers plated two runs in both the seventh and eighth to go up 6-1.
  • Graduate student Andrea Casabianca singled to right field in the bottom of the eighth and stole second, but MIT again got out of the jam.
  • Clark plated their final run of the season on a ball hit by sophomore CJ Johnson that scored senior Anthony Keefe as Clark fell 13-2.

  • Spencer tossed 4.2 innings, struck out four batters, and only allowed one earned run.
  • Jones went 1-3 with an RBI and a walk drawn.
  • Caulfield recorded a hit, scored a run, and stole a pair of bases.
  • Johnson also drove in a run in the contest.
