Baseball Earns 10-2 Victory Over Emerson in NEWMAC Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (16-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) welcomed Emerson (3-10, 0-1 NEWMAC) for their first NEWMAC game of the year and came away with a 10-2 victory over the Lions on Tuesday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Senior Maxwell Gitlin took the bump for the Cougars and recorded three innings to open the game without allowing a hit before Clark took a 3-0 advantage as junior Carter Doran and sophomore Michael Soares each registered RBI's in the bottom of the third.
  • Gitlin set the side down in order again in the top of the fourth and in the bottom of the inning, first-year Michael Salzillo scored before senior Billy Sullivan got caught in a rundown as Clark led 4-0.
  • After another scoreless inning from Gitlin, the Lions plated two runs to pull within two before junior Ryan Bonja and Sullivan each recorded RBI's to put the Cougars up 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Gitlin set down the side in order in the seventh and eighth before Clark added four runs in the bottom of the eighth as graduate student Ryan Caulfield, sophomore Dom Mariani, and Doran each recorded RBI's to take a commanding 10-2 lead.
  • In the top of the ninth, Gitlin recorded three straight outs to propel Clark to a 10-2 victory.
Inside the Stats
  • Gitlin tossed a complete game, only allowing one earned run, and struck out seven batters.
  • Mariani recorded a pair of hits, including a triple, stole a pair of bases, and scored two runs.
  • Doran added a double, two RBI's, and a run scored.
  • Caulfield registered three hits, including a triple, and drove in a run.
  • Salzillo, Bonja, and Sullivan each scored two runs.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Mitchell for a contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
