NEWPORT, R.I. – The Clark University baseball team (17-12, 2-8 NEWMAC) concluded their regular season series against No. 7 Salve Regina (22-4, 9-1 NEWMAC) and despite a late rally, fell 7-5 to the Seahawks on Tuesday afternoon from Reynolds Field.
How it Happened
- Salve Regina jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Cougars plated a run in the top of the second when sophomore Michael Soares singled to right field, scoring junior Ryan Bonja as Clark trailed 5-1.
- Graduate student Casey Gorczyca tossed a scoreless second, third, and fourth inning before the Seahawks added two more runs in the sixth.
- Clark scored two runs in the top of the sixth as sophomore Dom Mariani and junior Carter Doran each recorded RBI's as the Cougars pulled back within four at 7-3.
- Gorczyca and sophomore Matthew Donahue combined to allow no runs in the bottom of the seventh before Clark plated two runs in the top of the eighth as Bonja belted a two-RBI double to left field that scored Doran and Mainardi to pull the Cougars within two at 7-5.
- Sophomore Tommy Flaherty allowed no runs in the bottom of the eighth and in the top of the ninth, the Seahawks retired the side in order as Clark fell 7-5.
Inside the Stats
- Bonja went 2-4 from the dish, with a pair of doubles and two RBI's.
- Soares and Sullivan also tallied two hits.
- Doran and Mariani each recorded RBI's.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to action tomorrow for a non-conference game against Anna Maria beginning at 3:00 p.m.
