Baseball Drops NEWMAC Game to Salve Regina

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (17-8, 2-5 NEWMAC) welcomed No. 5 Salve Regina (19-3, 6-1 NEWMAC) to Granger for the first time since the Seahawks joined the conference on Tuesday afternoon and fell 13-5.

How it Happened
  • Senior Maxwell Gitlin took the bump for Clark and retired the side in order in the top of the first and after sophomore Dom Mariani recorded a hit in the bottom of the inning, the Seahawks got out of the inning with consecutive outs.
  • After Salve plated three runs in the top of the second, sophomore Michael Soares recorded an infield single in the bottom of the second, but was left on base.
  • The Seahawks scored six runs in the top of the third and in the bottom of the third, graduate student Ryan Caulfield singled to left field.
  • Salve Regina scored in both the fourth and the fifth before junior Ryan Bonja belted a grand slam to left field that plated junior Carter Doran, Caulfield, and senior Billy Sullivan.
  • Senior Heath Cockburn and first-year Brandon Berean each tossed scoreless innings before Mariani singled up the middle that scored Caulfield as Clark trailed 11-5 after seven.
  • Soares, Mariani, and Doran each reached base between the eighth and ninth inning, but didn't come around to score as the Seahawks won 13-5.  
Inside the Stats
  • Bonja belted a grand slam.
  • Caulfield added three hits, including a double and triple, and scored two runs.
  • Mariani and Soares each tallied two hits.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they welcome Amherst to Granger for a non-conference game beginning at 5:00 p.m.
