WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (21-19, 5-11 NEWMAC) hosted MIT (17-18, 7-9 NEWMAC) in a senior day doubleheader on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field and were edged by the Engineers in both games.
Seniors
Samuel Farrell,
Maxwell Gitlin,
Heath Cockburn,
Cory Giannelli,
Chris Domizio,
Anthony LoCasto, and
Billy Sullivan were recognized after the game for their contributions to the baseball program.
Game One: MIT 4, Clark 1
- Gitlin took the bump for Clark in game one and pitched a scoreless first and second inning before junior Tyler Jones and sophomore Dom Mariani each reached base, but were left on as the game remained tied at 0-0.
- Gitlin pitched another scoreless inning in the third and after MIT scored in the top of the fourth, sophomore Brayden Hollinrake drew a walk and Jones singled to right field before being left on base.
- Clark tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth as junior Ryan Bonja doubled down the left field line to score Mariani.
- Both pitchers retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh inning before the Engineers plated three runs in the top of the eighth.
- Junior Carter Doran singled in the bottom of the eighth and after Hollinrake, Sullivan, and Mariani each reached base in the bottom of the ninth, MIT got out of the inning as Clark fell 4-1.
Game Two: MIT 11, Clark 8
- MIT opened the second game with three runs in the top of the first and in the bottom of the inning, Bonja doubled to left field to plate graduate student Ryan Caulfield to cut the deficit to 3-1.
- Graduate student Benjamin Spencer threw a scoreless second and third inning before Domizio hit a sacrifice fly that scored Sullivan to make it a 3-2 ball game.
- Caulfield recorded an RBI double to left center in the bottom of the third that scored Farrell to tie the game at 3-3 before MIT added two runs in the top of the fifth.
- The Engineers scored three runs in the top of the sixth and in the bottom of the inning, Mariani recorded an RBI single to left field that scored Jones as Clark trailed 8-4.
- Clark plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh after a scoreless seventh from Cockburn as Domizio, Jones, and Mariani each drove in runs to cut the deficit to 8-7.
- Graduate student Jose Mencia tossed a scoreless eighth before Bonja hit a sacrifice fly that scored Sullivan to tie the game at 8-8.
- MIT scored three runs in the top of the ninth and the Engineers retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to win 11-8.
