Baseball Rallies to Top Amherst 6-5 on Thursday Afternoon

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (7-2) overcame an early deficit against Amherst (2-3) and rallied sparked by a four-run sixth inning to a 6-5 victory over the Mammoths on Thursday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • After Amherst scored a run in the top of the first, graduate student Benjamin Spencer tossed a scoreless second inning before the Mammoths plated three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-0 edge.
  • First-year Robby Roth threw a scoreless fifth before Clark scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth as senior Carter Doran singled through the right side to bring home both senior Tyler Jones and junior Michael Soares.
  • The Cougars rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth as junior Dom Mariani belted a homer to left field that plated graduate student Ryan Caulfield.
  • Sophomore Michael Salzillo drove in two runs later in the sixth with a double to right field that brought home graduate student Anthony LoCasto and Soares as Clark took a 6-4 lead.
  • Junior Tommy Flaherty recorded the final three outs of the seventh and retired the side in order in the eighth.
  • Flaherty closed the door on the Mammoths in the top of the ninth as he only allowed one hit and the Cougars recorded a strike him out throw him out to seal the game.
Inside the Stats
  • Doran and Salzillo each recorded a pair of hits and two RBI's apiece.
  • Mariani belted his first homer of the year and drove in two runs.
  • Soares drew three walks and scored two runs.
  • Roth earned his third win of the year on the mound after tossing three innings and allowed only one run.
  • Flaherty shut the door on the Mammoths with three shutout innings.
  • Spencer struck out five batters across three innings pitched.

Clark will travel to Mass. Maritime for a road non-conference contest tomorrow beginning at 4:00 p.m.
