Sullivan Belts Walk-Off Homer in Game Two as Baseball Splits With Wentworth

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (3-1) walked off in game two of the doubleheader with a home run from graduate student Billy Sullivan on the first pitch as the Cougars split the series against Wentworth (1-1) on Sunday afternoon.

Game One: Wentworth 18, Clark 3
  • Junior Nicolo Mainardi and graduate student Ryan Caulfield each reached base with walks in the top of the first before the Leopards got out of the jam and plated seven runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • Mainardi drove in Clark's first run of the game in the top of the third with an RBI that brought home senior Carter Doran.
  • Senior Sean Borden tossed a scoreless third and graduate student Heath Cockburn allowed no runs in the fourth before junior Dom Mariani doubled to left field to bring home Caulfield, who tripled the at-bat before.
  • In the top of the seventh, junior James Webster doubled and brought home sophomore Chas Caron as the scarlet and white fell 18-3.   
Game Two: Clark 5, Wentworth 4
  • First-year Danny Goodman got the ball for Clark in game two and tossed a scoreless first before Caulfield belted a two-run homer to right field to give the Cougars a 2-0 edge.
  • Goodman pitched two more shutout innings before Mariani tripled to right field and plated Sullivan to extend Clark's lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third.
  • The Cougars scored their fourth run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth when senior Carter Doran singled to right field and brought home sophomore Michael Salzillo as Clark led 4-0.
  • Goodman remained unblemished through five innings before the Leopards rallied back with three runs in the top of the sixth and a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4 entering the bottom of the seventh.
  • Sullivan stepped up to the dish and took the first pitch he saw out of the park towards right center as the Cougars walked-off on the Leopards to win 5-4.
What's Next
Clark will be back in action tomorrow morning when they take on Moravian for a contest beginning at 10:15 a.m.
