Bonja Belts Homer to Take Lead as Baseball Downs Dean, 9-8

FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (17-8) traveled to Dean (6-18) and fell behind early before rallying with seven runs in the top of the seventh as the Cougars came away with a 9-8 victory on Wednesday afternoon from the Longley Athletic Complex.

How it Happened
  • Dean jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first off an error before graduate student Casey Gorczyca retired the side in order in the second.
  • The Bulldogs added another run in the third before Clark got runners on second and third as juniors Michael Soares and Nicolo Mainardi each reached base, but Dean got out of the jam.
  • After another scoreless inning from Gorczyca, first-year Myles Fournier drew a walk and advanced to second before the Bulldogs got out of the inning.
  • Dean pushed their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the bottom of fifth before Clark finally got on the board with an RBI from Mainardi that brought home junior Dom Mariani.
  • The Bulldogs plated a run in the sixth before Clark's offense exploded for seven runs in the seventh as Soares drove in a pair of runs, Mariani recorded an RBI, senior Tyler Jones drove in a run, and senior Ryan Bonja belted a three-run homer to put the Cougars on top 8-6.
  • Senior Sean Borden tossed a scoreless seventh before first-year Cole Camara recorded an RBI that brought home Fournier as Clark led 9-6 in the top of the eighth.
  • The Bulldogs plated two runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to one at 9-8 and senior Connor Schmautz closed the door on Dean in the ninth as Clark came away with a 9-8 victory.

  • Bonja belted a three-run homer and scored a run.
  • Soares tallied a pair of RBI's, recorded a double, and scored.
  • Jones added three hits, a run, and an RBI.
  • Mariani, Kamara, and Mainardi also drove in runs.

What's Next
The Cougars will open up a six-game homestand on Saturday morning when they welcome Wheaton to Granger beginning at 11:00 a.m.
